According to me correct option should be A. But if it is C then What is the antecedent of 'this' ? Is it the discovery by scientists or the suffering of Roman aristocrats ?

The sentence is testing the use of modifiers and the proper placement of a subject and verb. The original sentence begins with a modifier, "Having discovered," which is a participle phrase that modifies an unknown subject. This construction creates a modifier error and can cause ambiguity.

Option (A) contains this modifier error. Option (B) begins with an infinitive phrase, "To have discovered," which also creates an ambiguity error. This construction implies that someone should have discovered the information, but it does not clarify who discovered the information.

Option (C) starts with a dependent clause that clearly identifies who discovered the information, "Since scientists have discovered." This construction removes the ambiguity present in the original sentence and clarifies the relationship between the two clauses.

Option (D) is similar to option (C) and is grammatically correct. However, it uses a passive construction, which is not necessary in this case.

Option (E) is not grammatically correct. It contains a comma splice and a weak construction. It is also less clear than option (C) or (D) because it does not clearly identify the subject of the sentence.

Therefore, option (C) is the best choice, as it is the most concise, clear, and grammatically correct sentence that correctly identifies the subject and verb.

Answer: C
