Hi there, I'm applying for HBS 2+2 and want to know whether I should play down my new finance experience as HBS tends to only accept those from artsy/non-orthodox backgrounds. I studied law at undergrad and had several legal internships (my extracurricular experience has also largely been law to date), but this year I chose to transition to finance, so I have an upcoming finance internship and have been engaging in numerous case competitions etc. I also started interning for a start up this year. Do you think HBS will prefer it if I focus my career aspirations on VC/PE, or whether this would hinder my chances?
Thanks very much in advance
Hi alphabetgoogle!
You're asking some really great questions! HBS's 2+2 Program is specifically geared at attracting STEM students, likely because they otherwise get sucked away in the tech industry and don't think to return for their MBA in a few years time. That doesn't mean that the ideal 2+2 candidate is planning to exclusively pursue VC, start-ups, or (maybe in your case) Google/Alphabet. I worked with a 2+2 this past cycle who got in saying that she wanted to go into consulting after graduation. The key was that transition fit beautifully into her narrative.
The success or failure of your application is really going to
come down to your personal narrative, not which internships you choose to emphasize. If you are able to developing a compelling narrative and your numbers are in range, I'm confident that you'll have a good shot.
Lastly, in case you haven't already, I would definitely check out the links that HBS posts on its website.
