HBS Rejections: #1 Reason So Far in Round 1Many applicants who were already “released” last month from the Harvard Business School admissions process have contacted us for the first time at
MBA Admit.com and requested that we provide a “Ding Analysis” of their applications. Having viewed many of these applications from candidates we had not worked with before, we have seen a commonality among them. What seems to be the #1 reason for their lack of success with admission to Harvard Business School?
The most dominant commonality among these rejected applications is a lack of strong leadership. Some of the candidates who we have interacted with for the first time as they forwarded to us their rejected applications had GMAT scores as high as 770 and GPAs as high as 3.9. But those candidates had very weak leadership credentials.
What does this mean for you? As you prepare your HBS application, try to highlight your leadership successes and successes as a thought leader. This does not mean that if you have not been a team leader or a project manager in the workplace that you cannot be successful in the HBS admissions process. You could have demonstrated leadership in many venues – in your extracurricular record, for example. Similarly, in the workplace you may not have led a team or had direct reports, but you might have led a part of a project and can highlight your skills using such examples.
Harvard wants to train the future leaders of the business world and the thought leaders who will influence the direction of industries. Try to provide evidence that you are such a promising leader.
