Hi there,
Overall there's no absolute right or wrong.... if the q is "Tell me about yourself", my view would be something closer to option 2 you mentioned, though including some of your professional path or comments on it may be appropriate if you'd like too as part of that... but I'd HONESTLY ask yourself, not worrying about admissions for the moment, how you WOULD describe yourself, let's say to someone new you met... what are the key aspects of who you are that you'd most like to share? It could be any or all of the following: life/world experiences; personality traits; strength/weaknesses; professional path or accomplishments; goals/aspirations; people or places that have impacted you; passions/interests... etc. Just not ALL of that !

Pick out your key aspects about you that you feel most make you, well, YOU!, and mention. To be honest you should probably have that list in mind before you even apply to really maximize your essays.
Keep in mind sometimes HBS does ask you to walk through your resume... so that would obviously be option 1 you mentioned.
Hope that helps!
