I've heard that some people wear earplugs while taking the GMAT. I have a pair of noise cancelling headphones--can I wear them during the test? Obviously they wouldn't be plugged into anything...

When I took the test in Ottawa, they had noice-cancelling headphones at each workstation. I didn't have to use mine, because the test centre is very small and there were only 5 workstations, and it was really quiet. But they were there for anyone who wanted to use them.

You might want to call your local test centre and find out if they offer the same, or if they allow you to bring your own.

officially they do not allow you to take your own earplugs. Sometimes they are less strict. I was even allowed to use a pen instead of the pencils :P

Noise cancelling headphones were provided at the Los angeles test center where I took the GMAT.

However, test takers were prohibited from bringing their own pencils, scratch paper, calculators, watches, earplugs, wallets, etc. To put it simply, all personal belongings had to be checked into a locker prior to entering the testing area.

One thing is for sure; you can cheat and use your brain.

Didn't use the headphones, they were huge, cheap, and looked uncomfortable. Plus I didn't practice with them on, so they probably would have hurt more than helped me personally.

I thought the same thing about th headphones, I put them on for a second in the begining and then took them off. They were really uncomfortable.
