Get a good score, better than the mean score of ur preferred colleges. You can prove this way that u can take on academics without ny hitch. so a score of around 730 will negate ur average performance in academics.

is it that gmat score does have that much of power to overshadow the low scores?

IMO yes..also prove it in ur application that the average performance in academics was not because of weakness in studies but because of something else..

As long as you can show your drive for growth and excellence in other areas, you are fine. The AD Com will not ignore all of your positive points and penalize you ONLY for your average academic score . At this point, your best bet is to get a700 + GMAT score to prove that you have the ability to get good scores.

I hope it helped:)

Scoring 700+ is one way to stand out among the applicants. This is going to be important with your background because schools usually have a rough range of # of students from a certain background (CS India Engineer). This is because they want a balanced diverse class - if the whole class were India CS engineers there would be no added value to the students attending. So there is a rough range - to be part of that range you'll want to excel on your GMAT and/or have slightly different experiences from your peers.
