Dear friends, this is my first post on this useful webside in which I have always found insightful resources and counceling, so I hope that someone qualified could help me.
Yesterday I tried my first attempt at GRE official practice test without knowing anything about how to write an AWA (Analytical writing assessment) and about the criteria for the grades. In addition, I am not a native speaker so this is even more complex for me.
I was hoping that some expert could briefly
go through my essay to grade it according to the new GRE standards, if they want to spend also 2 additional minutes would be great to have
areas for improvement and
mistakes (in their view) highlighted. I ask this so I can have a benchmark for the practice and writing of my next essays. Thank you in advanced very appreciated. (PS: yeah I know that there might be some grammar mistakes but it is the best that I could produce in 30 mins)
"A nation should require all of its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college"
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position -------------------------------------------------------------------
The author presents a captivating position regarding the fact that a country should demand all of its students to pursue the same curriculum until they join university. This is certainly a multifaced topic, but in this essay I will assert how such decision might severely hinder students' education and ultimately create involuntary negative repercussions to society as a whole.
First of all, demanding students to follow the same curriculum will significantly reduce the variety of skills and preparedness of students within the country. For example, at the start of high school different pupipls with different skillset can opt for different curricula and because of this arrive at universities with a variety of skills. However, if there is only one curriculum that precious variety at country level will be lost in favor of a ruthless standardization.
In addition, imposing one single curriculum will greatly limit the freedom of choice of the students for their own careers with the result of suffocating their passions. This phenomenon might have negative repercussions on the motivation of students to attend college, which in turn might result in a fewer people attending college and reduce the education and literacy levels of a population. As a consequence of the lower variety of skills, the GDP of a nation ultimately might suffer making the overall country less competitive than other countries in the long run.
Moreover, the plan of requiring all students to follow the same curriculum relies on the unwarranted assumption that the curriculum will be comprehensive and well designed. If this were not the case the consequences might be disastrous: thousands of students going through the same faulty and superficial curriculum that rather than teaching new skills and critical thinking teaches students to conform to the status-quo and repress creativity. In addition, I also believe that this phenomenon might ultimately have also dangerous repercussions on the democratic integrity of a country. For instance, an authoritarian government might ultimately leverage the single curriculum policy to instill in students ideas of hate and conformism transforming gradually through generations the country in an authoritarian regime.
In conclusion, I strongly disagree with the author position of requiring students to study the same national curriculum until the enter college because of the lack of variety in skills that this create, of the limitation posed to the freedom of choice of students, and of the faulty assumptions that such curriculum will be unbiased and well designed.
