Hey guys,

I have been preparing for gmat lately, and given few mock tests over the past week.
I have observed that my verbal score is usually above 42 but the quant score is never above 35.
Seeing the statistics, i have realized that people tend to score good on quants and not on verbal, which is opposite in my case. So i kindly request for a startergy to improve on quants , because if i score good in quants >45 i am ought to score 720+ in gmat and i don't want to lose on this opportunity.

Thanks in advance for your valuable inputs

Hi Sagar360,

To start, a CAT is really a 'measuring device' - when used correctly, it will give you a realistic score and help define your strengths and weaknesses, but it will NOT help you to fix any of those weaknesses. To raise your scores, you have to learn the necessary Tactics and put in the proper practice and repetitions. The CAT will show you whether your studies are helping you to improve or not. In addition, the process of taking (and reviewing) a CAT requires a significant amount of energy and effort - and takes time to 'recover' from. This is one of the reasons why you typically shouldn't take more than 1 CAT per week - and your last CAT should be taken about 1 week before Test Day. You mentioned that you took a 'few' CATs in the last week; if that means 3 CATs, then that's probably 2 CATs too many. That type of frequency greatly increases your chances of 'burning out' before Test Day - and that's something that we want to avoid.

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) On what dates did you take each of your CATS/mocks and how have you scored on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your goal score?
5) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
6) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
7) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Which practice tests have you taken? Take one of the official practice tests if you have been taking non-official tests.

Your verbal score looks really good, but your quant needs a lot of work, as a Q35 (26%) usually means that you don't know, or are not comfortable with, the basic concepts. What material do you have, and what have you done to study for the exam till now?

You have to remember shortcut tricks like: shortcut keys to find the Square of Numbers, Easy Method for Take Square Root, Easy Method for Take Cube Root of Numbers, Shortcut for the Multiplication of 2 Digit & 3 Digit Numbers and many more shortcut keys you have to remember.

You could go through this post. Pick anything that you think you'd like to use, as at this stage you shouldn't spend too much time coming up with a complicated plan or strategy. Just get started on the basics.

Hi Sagar360,

You can try out the TTP course as it is phenomenal and covers the entire syllabus really well. Plus it has great reviews on GMATCLUB. I must add that if you are particularly looking to discover and improve on your weak areas in Quant; a subscription to GMATCLUB tests is the best way to do that. They are indeed phenomenal and will not only pinpoint your weak areas but also help you improve on them.

Further taking multiple mocks might help. Apart from the GMATPREP, Manhattan GMAT tests and Veritas Prep Tests in my experience have good verbal and Quant section and will certainly help you point out and improve your weak areas.

Further another advantage of taking many mocks is to build up your stamina. Apart from the GMATPREP tests, taking practice tests of any major GMATPREP company ought to do that.

Lastly I would also encourage you to purchase the GMATPREP QP 1 for some great additional practice. Here is a link that will help you with your decision.

Hope this helps. All the best.

Hi Sagar360,

With a March 22nd Test Date, you now have less than 2 weeks of study time remaining. While raising a Q35 to a Q45+ is an achievable goal, to consistently score at that higher level, you will likely need more training time than you have remaining. As such, you might want to consider pushing back your Test Date.

1) What are the exact application deadlines you're facing?
2) Going forward, how many hours do you think you can consistently study each week?

Hi Sagar360,

While I understand that your current plan is to apply by the end of the month, defining the specific application deadline for each of the Programs that you plan to apply to is important (as they define how much time you actually have before your applications are due).

Since you have not named the specific Schools either, it's unclear what type of GMAT Score you might "need" to be a competitive Applicant. Your Goal Score is a 720+, but what is the minimum Score that you would apply with? For example, if you scored 650 on March 22nd, would you still apply as planned or would you change your plans?

Hi Sagar360,

I’m glad you reached out, and I’m happy to help. Since you are unable to break Q35 even after preparing for some time, it's likely that you have numerous quant weaknesses that must be addressed in order for you to improve your GMAT quant score. That said, in order to improve your quant skills, you need to follow a study plan that allows you to individually learn each quant topic and practice that topic until you've gained mastery. In order to follow the path described above, you may consider using an online self-study course and furthermore as rohan2345 mentioned, you should consider using Target Test Prep. We are the top-rated quant course here on GMAT Club and also offer a full-access 5-day trial.

If you have any further questions regarding your plan or Target Test Prep, feel free to each out to me directly.

Hi Sagar360,

Based on the CAT Scores that you have reported, you appear to have the skills needed to Score 600+, so your insistence on sticking with your current timeframe makes sense.

Given your timeframe and available study time, I think that you would find the EMPOWERgmat Quant Score Booster to be quite helpful. Most of our clients complete that Study Plan in under a month, but even if you did not complete that entire Study Plan, you would still learn a great deal about the Tactics, patterns and little 'secrets' to the Quant section. We have a variety of free resources on our site (www.empowergmat.com), so you can 'test out' the Course before setting up an account.

If you have any additional questions, then you can feel free to contact me directly.
