Hi,
I am facing difficulty in solving a particular type of CR questions. I have seen passages that inform us about statistics, or revenue, etc. Basically, numbers are involved in such passage. More often than not, I face difficulty in inferring statements in such passages.
For instance, the following passage appeared in the OG.
Transportation expenses accounted for a large portion of the total dollar amount spent on trips for pleasure by residents of the United States in 1997, and about half of the total dollar amount spent on the transportation was airfare. However, the large majority of United States residents who took trips for pleasure in 1997 did not travel by airplane but used other means of transportation.
If the statements above are true, which of the following must also be true about United States residents who took trips for pleasure in 1997? This passage involves understanding averages while others may involve profits, percentages or some other math concept.
Please suggest any resource, such as video links, club links, and web links, to help me better understand these types of questions. I would really appreciate any resource that covers passages involving numbers comprehensively.
Thanks in advance.
Hi chillbrorelax,
The questions you are talking about fall under Quantitative framework. There are mainly four types of frameworks on which CR questions are based.
- Plan-goal
- Comparison
- Causality
- Quantitative
And there are certain guidelines for each framework which allow you to pre-think the missing link. Before you pre-think, it's important to identify the premise and the conclusion. Identifying the conclusion helps you identify the scope of the passage, which in turn helps you to eliminate answer choices which are irrelevant or out of scope.
Coming to the question you posted, the key here is identify the situation where both the scenarios that is "
about half of the total dollar amount spent on the transportation was airfare. However, the large majority of United States residents who took trips for pleasure in 1997 did not travel by airplane but used other means of transportation" co-exist.
So, the right answer must be something along the same line. The incorrect answer choices either do not address the issue or state some irrelevant facts or use familiar words from the argument but do not address the situation. So, if you understand the scope of the argument, you will easily eliminate the four answer choices. Remember, GMAT Verbal is not about selecting one right answer choice but eliminating four incorrect answer choices.
