Hi everyone,

I recently started studying for gmat, was on and off with no systematic studying for like a month or so, did all quant and CR portion of OG, didn't finish SC and didn't even start on RC. overall I feel im really bad at SC and RC so I was thinking of tackling them individually in the next month or so.

So meanwhile I thought since I never took a real GMAT test, maybe I should give CAT-style test a try just to see how the real exam is like. So I did the manhattan CAT #1 that's free, and boy did that scare me. I am very good at quant (math major in undergrad) and I found more than 5 questions on the test that was impossible to solve under 5 min. The verbal section was difficult too. I end up with Q51, V33 with a score of 680. Given my goal is to get to at least 740, I'm thinking there's a long way to go for my studying.

Then today I tried the official GMAT prep software and did the first prep test. I noticed the math was significantly easier. The verbal was tough but nothing crazy either. I end up with Q50V38 with a score of 740.

I would be perfectly happy if I can score a 740 in real exam, so my question is how realistic is the prep score, and how much longer should I study before I give the GMAT a first try.

Thanks!

The mock scores are only realistic to the extent to which you mimic the official GMAT. The fact that you skipped one of the section might have increased your efficiency, but still the scores are very good. Next time, try to take the CAT along with AWA and IR to train your body and mind for the 4 hours marathon test.

With those mock CAT scores, you are sure to score high on the GMAT.
Scores of 51 and 50 on the tests surely shows your expertise in the Quants section.

Regarding the Verbal section, you can surely improve more if you go through all the questions from the OG and the Verbal Review.
But make sure that while you are preparing for Verbal, you should not leave Quants unattended.

GMAT Prep CATs are the most accurate predictors of your current standing.
You can buy 4 additional tests (highly recommended) from mba.com and supplement your preparation.

Hi kittybite,

When you take each CAT, you really must take the FULL CAT (with the Essay and IR sections) and do so under conditions that 'mirror' what you'll face on Test Day. Since you skipped the Essay both times, you took a shorter Test and expended less energy than you will on Test Day. As such, these scores are likely a bit 'inflated.' You should plan to take a new FULL-LENGTH CAT in the next 1-2 weeks. That score will better properly assess your skills. With a Test Date in late May, you still have plenty of time to study and hone your skills.
