hi karlfurt,

Well, for the 1st question I will say A.

In most developed and interdependent economies, the necessity of the government’s playing some role in the economy is disputed.

A. interdependence goes hand in hand with development.
>>Both developed and interdependent countries have a common point about the need of a government in the economy. Eventhough these economies are developed, they are somehow dependent to eachother.
----------------------

For the 2nd question, I am not sure, I would say E but this is a confusing one :???

I say A for the first one as well, by default because the other answers seem irrelevant to the conclusion. I thought the passage implied that in most advanced societies, the role of the govt playing in economics is disputed.. but the OE says that the advanced society is acquiesce to the idea that govt has to control part of it. This doesnt seem consistent to me either.

On the second one I agree with E, but A seems good too but i dont know if a survey would consider such information. So E looks better.

For the first problem, I agree with you - A. That means the Cliffs CAT correction(and problem) isnt correct....

For the second point, I didnt understand answer A "scapegoat". My answer was C, since the text for me turns out to be critical. "Identification of the circumstances lies not only on fixing but in learning lessons".
I didnt find that E could be the right answer, because it speaks about a "particular accident". The scope of the text is larger than "the particular accident". It is neiter a "description".

Anyway, you are right, the answer is E : "This choice is related most fully to the subject matter of the original statement." says the book. It is not a very deep explanation. For the reasons I gave above, im still sceptic about this choice.

Karlfurt,

A scapegoat is a person who is chosen as the target of a blame even if they might not be responsible for a phenomenon. For example, society could blame the poor people in a society for its problems. Therefore making them the scapegoat for all of societies problems. Even if they are not.

Hope that makes it clearer. GMAT on Tuesday aaah! haha.

Good luck for your test!

Now it's clearer, but it 's also clearer that one should be careful by using Gmat preparation material... The questions/answers are confusing, hope it s not the case with the real gmat.
