Hi ankitgrooves,

A January 10th Test Date gives you less than 4 weeks of potential study time - and with a V27, you would have lost significant points in ALL 3 major Verbal categories (RC, SC and CR). To lock-in that higher Score in the Verbal section, you will need to hone some really specific Verbal skills (and it's possible that "your way" of handling the Quant section is actually hurting you in the Verbal section - meaning that you might have to work on BOTH your Quant and Verbal skills before you will be able to consistently score at a much higher level).

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) Over the last 4 months, how many hours did you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far? What “brands” of CATs/mocks have you used?
3) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

Hi Rich,
Thank you for your feedback. Before I reply to the queries, here is some basic info regarding the test. I took it at the 1 pm time slot as that seems the most productive time for me. Besides, I always practised verbal section during mocks as it requires more screen concentration and any other section first drains that energy and it is difficult to concentrate on the screen after that. Also, this attempt is me getting back to studies after a gap of 13 years and the prep was done with a full-time job. Hence most of the 4 months were spent in learning GMAT specific strategies, revisiting quant concepts and learning verbal concepts and strategies.

To answer your queries:
1) I started with a private tutor with 3 hours of quant and 3 hrs of verbal per week (4 classes per week). Besides this self-study was another 6-8 hrs per week including the weekends.
2) Study material was custom made by the tutor from OG, Manhattan, Veritas. I took 5 Manhattan mocks, 2 mbadotcom mocks 2 Veritas.
3) Started with mocks after 2 months of study of concepts and basic drill solving (untimed). I took mocks every Sunday and some Saturdays (I have working Saturdays). Quant scores improved from Q41 to Q49. Verbal scores were always between 24-32, improving each manhattan mock. But mbadotcom mock had the lowest verbal scores of 25 and 26.
(It is important to point out that I missed question 31 on the quant section in the actual GMAT test and the penalty must have dropped the score to 48.)

GOALS
4) Overall score goal is 670-690.
5) Schools have been shortlisted based on my extensive work experience, future interest in supply chain MBA, 1-year course, Full time. Most such schools are based in Europe. One such is TCD, Ireland. (fall 2022 is the target for all schools).

With current timelines in mind, it will be very difficult to unlearn what I have picked up in last 4 months. As you pointed out, really specific work in verbal (and quant if you feel my current strategies are not enough) needs to be done by me and for that very intensive help, to the extent of reviewing my error log, is needed.

I hope I have answered the queries to your satisfaction.

Thank you,

I got a 610 (Q48,V27) with 4 months of prep. I am planning to retake the GMAT by 10/01/2022.
Hi Ankit, I am afraid that 25 days might be insufficient for the 8 point Verbal improvement that you are looking for.

Hi ankitgrooves.

What exactly have you done so far to prepare for the verbal section?

Also, when you have been practicing answering verbal questions, how much time have you taken typically to answer each practice question?
