Hi Guys,
I would really appreciate help to decide on MBA vs MIM for a better career in consulting 7 years down the line and also the right schools for same.
I plan to get into consulting (strategy to be specific)

Profile:

Undergraduation: NIFT, Bachelors in Fashion Technology (GPA- 8.1)
GMAT score: 700 (Q48 V37) (second attempt, first was 610 if at all it matters)
work experience: 1 year full time as an Entrepreneur, started and run a cafe profitably for one year at the age of 19 with a team of 5 people along with college. Currently working on my E-commerce business in Handicraft space. The start up is selected in top 10 budding handicraft start ups in country by Govt of India.

extra curriculars:

1) district level athlete (have over 10 gold medals), founded athletics club in the college.
2) Head of student council at school

Hey, PranavChaudhry
It is very common for students to get confused with their course selection.
MBA and MiM are both management-related degrees.
MBA course is more practical learning; that is, you will gain real-life experience and skills during this course
On the other hand, MiM is a more theoretical-based course.
As your end goal is to have a career in consulting, gaining practical experience alongside theoretical learning should be ideal for you.
Fees-wise, MBA courses are slightly more expensive than MiM.
Though MiM has become quite popular following the last few years, it is still unknown, and some employers may not have heard about it.

Considering all these factors, MBA should be the ideal choice for you.

-Your GMAT and GPA are pretty good.
-You also mentioned you are an entrepreneur and have started two ventures in your college.
-Be sure to mention this in your essay and SOP explicitly.
-Explain your responsibilities and your personal growth as an entrepreneur.

Your extracurriculars are also impressive.
As mentioned here, you founded your college’s athletics club and were the head of the student council in school.
This shows your leadership and hardworking skills.

All in all, I would say you have a pretty decent profile. If you make a strong application, you can definitely get admitted to your dream school.

As you didn’t mention your preferred country, I am going to mention a few top schools from top countries you should apply to

US - Stanford School, Wharton, MIT(Sloan), Harvard
Europe- HEC, INSEAD, LBS

If you need assistance with your essays and SOPs or any other application process, we would be happy to help you.
We have helped over 5000 students get admitted into their dream schools.
We can help you build a strong profile and with school selection.
If you would like, we can set up a free consulting session with you at your convenience.

Hello PranavChaudhry,

Hope this finds you well.

We agree with one of the comments above regarding why you intend to get into consulting 7 years later. Essentially, a career in consulting is one you should target early on, immediately upon graduating.

We feel that an MBA is what you should pursue particularly if you can delay the applications by one year. It will definitely help provide you with rich real-world business experience. An additional year will also help you add a greater number of talking points.

All the best!
