Help with solving SC questions

Question

Hello,

I would like to ask if someone knows a good way to highlight the components of the sentences when solving SC questions. I mean, since it is not possible highlight the components of a sentence such as "Subject", "Verb" etc. and it will take too much time to write it down each time on the pad at the exam, is there clever way to take notes to do this on the pad quickly?

I imagine instead of writing "Subject" a person could replace it with "S" and so on to shave some seconds. But like you said, time would be an issue. Some or perhaps each of the answer choices may switch things up here and there. You could have a subject on one end in (A) but towards the end in (C).

Oh you really don't need to identify all the parts of speech and grammatical constructs, for every sentence. That would be giving way more important to grammar than it deserves

. Develop an eye to quickly identify the concepts that are being tested in the question you are solving; subsequently, you just focus on eliminating incorrect answer choices based on those specific concepts only , and not worry about the other concepts.

Hi Conquistador23.

If you are overly focused on the elements of sentences in Sentence Correction, you are likely to miss structural and meaning issues in the sentences. So, taking the time to note all the different elements probably isn't going to help you that much in SC and may hurt your performance.

You're better off learning to read the sentences from end to end and pick up on issues in each version as you read it.

SC is more about meaning than about grammar. Don't focus on each and every component. It will only waste precious time. Rather, look for the intention - what the author wants to say. Eliminate the wrong answer choices based on that and use your knowledge to identify the correct answer choice out of the remaining options.

For GMAT Verbal, it is very important that you follow the right methodology and the logical approach. Your focus has to be on eliminating four incorrect choices rather than choosing the right one. The key is to develop a solid understanding of the concepts that are typically tested on the GMAT and master the process skills that are required to solve GMAT questions. Only then, you will be able to smartly avoid the traps set by the test makers.

Before you start learning, it's important to understand what is actually tested using the questions. Each module in Verbal (SC, CR and RC) has to be approached in a different way. For example, before you start learning the concepts of SC, you need to understand that  SC questions on GMAT test your ability to convey the right meaning without any ambiguity . So, it's important to approach them from a  meaning stand-point . You might have often come across answer choices which are both grammatically correct and convey a logical meaning but are indeed incorrect because they do not convey the intended meaning. So, the  process to approach SC  questions is to:
• Comprehend the original meaning of the sentence
• Identify errors if any (both grammatical and meaning wise)
• Eliminate answer choices which either are grammatically incorrect or do not convey the intended meaning

Once you start solving SC questions using a systematic approach as detailed above, you will be able to avoid taking too much time in SC questions as there will be no confusion in your mind regarding the approach.
