Sure, "Her latest book has engendered a lot of controversy." is a good sentence. The tense suggests that the controversy started in the past and continues through the present, so the book still engenders controversy.
Not to be too picky, but if you're wondering about tenses, your question should be in the simple present, "Does this statement have the correct verb tense?"

Would be great if you could give the entire context. The sentence itself is correct, but if the 'intent' of the sentence is to convey that the controversy has now died down, then your sentence would be:
Her latest book engendered a lot of contraversy. (Simple Past)
So, perhaps a better question would be if you could state 'what' you want to convey and then, whether this sentence conveys the intended meaning.
