Here are my official GMAT and GRE scores –
GMAT V46 Q47 [Per ESR - RC v51, SC v50, CR v42]
GRE V166 Q161
I’ve to admit that I lucked out on verbal scores on both the occasions. Here is why-
1) I have NEVER scored more than 41 on my verbal section in any of the prep tests. But I have never scored below 39 either
2) I don’t recall scoring more than 160 on GRE verbal in prep tests either.
3) I’ve been observing my accuracy on official questions, more consciously now. Sadly, my accuracy is only 85-90% regardless of difficulty level of questions. Nowhere close to V46. My accuracy does not seem to drop hugely with harder questions somehow.
4) I hardly studied for the verbal. Read
MGMAT old guides I got from a friend and solved OG, VG questions. For RC, I didn’t even finish all passages and my RC score is V51. How crazy is that! Only now I realize that people have extracted thousands of verbal questions from official sources.
5) GMAC says standard error of measurement is 3 points. My score v46 is 2 standard error from v40. With more than 200k students taking the gmat every year, I guess, a ton of people get lucky like I did (about 4.5% roughly 9000 students each year). So, my score should not be so surprising after all.
I have two paths to take from here-
1) Be real. Lightening is not gonna strike twice. Take the score. Never mention about ‘luck’ to anyone ever. Act as if I earned it. lol
OR
2) Fancy my chances for an even bigger score. Why?
a) RC v51 and SC v50: I would not have imagined that score even in my wildest dreams. Having said so, I am fascinated by words and languages, how the languages evolved from PIE to present day languages in Europe and Asia etc. I loved SC section of GMAT so much that I contemplated reading Elements of Style, Chicago Style Guide, or Elements of Style by Steven Pinker but there wasn’t enough time.
RC: Just like an average test taker, I HATE reading RC passages but on the other hand, none of the passages seem to pose a challenge to me. I am a very inquisitive person and so relish the fact that these passages always help me know something interesting and new.
I don’t know but there might be a very very thin chance that apart from massive stroke of luck I might have benefited from my proclivity for languages. Why not take advantage of it and see how far I can go on the GMAT?
b) I do have time on my hand – I will be applying next fall.
c) A higher score will DEFINITELY help. For Asian male, adcoms and our own competition are unsparing. There seems to be some misunderstanding esp among western admissions experts that there is no advantage to a higher score after an average score of the school. I know too many people who got into Yale, Cornell, Ross, NYU by simply improving their gmat score from sub760 to +760. Plus avg score for Asian male itself is higher by 30-40 points than the avg for the entire class. I guess, ranking agencies are to be blamed here too as they place a lot of weight on avg gmat score. I’m a bit evangelical about this. 😊Let me stop here though as this is a whole new discussion for another day.
- Ok so would you encourage me to take another stab at the GMAT?
- How do 780+ scorers prep differently?
- What all resources? GRE/LSAT material apart from GMAT official questions? Which private test prep providers would u recommend for that near perfect GMAT score?
-
TTP vs
MGMAT? I know
TTP’s curriculum was developed by
MartyTargetTestPrep, an 800’er and one of the most insightful experts out there. On the other, from what I know,
MGMAT has/d a couple 800ers and many many 790,780ers involved in creating its course.
- My reading speed is a bit slow right now. I’m slowing down even more when I follow
GMATNinja strategy for RC. If I solve a couple thousand RC questions from say LSAT/GRE, will it improve? Is it possible to improve one’s reading speed in such short time?
- How many questions can u afford to get wrong overall (Q+V) and still end up 780+? How does the algorithm work in v50 and q50’s?
- My understanding is you can get only a couple questions wrong in that range. How to manage stress, stay positive and confident when u are gunning for such a high score, cuz while practicing, every now and then, u can get a question wrong and that will put a dent in your optimism?
Sorry for the long post. Thank you and looking forward to your advice.
