I am a 24 year old Canadian male who recently wrote their GMAT and received a score that would have been unexpected a couple weeks earlier. Before my GMAT score, I wasn't necessarily expecting to apply to programs outside of my own country. So now I need a bit of help in gauging what my chances are of being admitted to a tier 1 school. I fear the problem may be that my work experience isn't standout amongst other applicants.
GMAT: 720 (Q47 V42)
GPA: 3.5 from a top Canadian university (3.6 in my last two years)
Major: Political Studies (Specializing in International Relations)
Work Experience: 2 years working within my university's athletics department's marketing unit as a creative designer. I had an excellent position more or less created for me after completing a successful internship with the department during my final year of study, and I've handled a number of large projects in what is essentially an art director role.
I also have run my own marketing consulting and creative design company part-time for 2.5 years, and have completed contracts with some reasonably large clients. I have taught myself multiple programming/scripting languages and industry-related programs over the past few years in order to succeed with both my full-time employment and my own business.
Extracurriculars: Varsity athlete for full undergraduate career (approx. 24 hour per week commitment); Vice-President of Varsity Leadership Council (responsible for organizing on- and off-campus initiatives through varsity athletics community); member of Varsity Discipline Committee (responsible for negotiating sanctions with members of the athletics department administration); current strength and conditioning / assistant coach for my old team; black belt in Sanshou Chinese kickboxing
Goals / Why Business School?: I'm currently at a point in my life where I feel a strong need to take my career to the next level. Part of me wants to end up working in some form of marketing / creative director role, in which case my goal would be to operate my own marketing /advertising agency down the road. Another part of me is very interested in management consulting, particularly anything that would allow me to frequently work internationally. Ultimately, I want a career that will challenge me and that will also allow me to eventually give back through philanthropic pursuits. I feel that an MBA would be a logical step in that direction.
Which Schools? For Canadian schools, I am planning to apply to both Schulich and Rotman. As for American schools, after some research I feel that Kellogg would be my absolute top choice, and I know that might be aiming high. What would be my chances in getting into some of the tier 1 schools? And are there any schools you would specifically recommend that I should consider? I think I would like to try and apply to 2-3 US school this round along with my two Canadian choices.
Thanks very much for your help.
