In my experience in technology industry as an engineer, I have found that it is almost impossible to ask your current supervisor for a b-school rec as managers in this industry are not very mba-friendly.
Explanation for not having current manager's rec is required in many b school apps, which suggests that b-schools perceive not having current supervisor's rec as exception rather than norm.
Any engineer who asked successfully his manager for rec and was not fired here?

Yea, I asked two of my managers for letters of rec and it went just fine. I also work in semiconductors just like you. I suppose it depends on your boss, and how he/she perceives your value to the group. Any manager that just fires a capable person because they are applying to school is an idiot. Especially since finding capable, good people can be a challenge in this industry.
You also don't absolutely have to have a managers recommendation, but I would get it if you can. Do you really feel like your manager would lay you off for applying to business school?

Hi Guys
Do you have a feeling that recommenders from high-tech may not be as eloquent as their counterparts from other industries? Also, they are not used to the B-school recommendation drill.
Wonder how that will work out for us !
