Hi Aspirant MBA:

As a entrepreneur you would be welcomed at most of the business schools. Your experience would help you and would not be a show stopper. There are some schools which provide tailor made courses in your Industry which would accelerate your growth for raising capital, build technical and functional skills and expand opportunities. What you need to highlight in the application process is how the business school can add value in your business during and post MBA. Do focus on the skills you need to build. You can leverage faculty, alumni and Industry connects to build your business further.

However do improve upon GMAT and aim for class average or above at the desired list of programs.

Regards,

Hi,

About 6 months back I (alongwith my younger brother) launched a startup. The startup is still in its nascent stages but has relatively positive success. Its an internet based startup (pardon for withholding the name for sake of anonymity) with major clients in insurance, banking and commercial vehicles sector . We both have a relatively technical background with not much managerial experience. I have felt, if either of us had a formal MBA (or alike) we would be able to engage more proactively in crucial decision making eg. JVs/Fundings/Financials, etc. I have read many successful start up entrepreneurs may or may not have a formal education. I have over 4+ years of work ex at leading IT company in India and Singapore. I took my GMAT way back in 2011, and scored 610 (not a good score by any means). I had a good record throughout college and school with scores above the 90%. I am aged 28.

I would like to know, if I apply for an MBA would my startup/entrepreneurial role seen as a handicap?

Thank you, i look forward to your candid replies.

Hello Aspirant,

Having the experience of starting a firm and running it shows you are a risk taker, and will be positively viewed. But make sure you are not conveying the impression that you quit from enterprises prematurely. Besides, if you could say what aspects of this MBA learning can help you run your business better, you will sound authentic.
