I am a 30-year-old female with an MPH degree and 1 year of work experience. I will be applying in 2018 ( class of 2020). I am currently volunteering at a local non-profit and working as an unpaid intern on a research project. I will be appearing for GMAT in November 2017.What can I do or what independent projects I can undertake to improve my chances of getting into one of the top B schools in US?

Thank you for your post. I would love to help you but would require more information in order to give you specific advice. Why don't you email your resume to scott@personalmbacoach.com so I can learn more about your background including schools you went to, GPA etc.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Best,
Scott

The biggest hurdle is your first sentence... I am 30 yr old female with MPH degree and 1 year of experience. So the one year is on the light side for MBA programs- so what you should try to do is highlight other past work even if it was part of your masters program. You need to emphasize professional work in some fashion as that is what I see as the big need.
Paid or unpaid is not as important as getting the work itself. Paid is better- but the experience and how it plays into your story overall is most important. To learn more about Stratus could help you position yourself in the best possible light- go to this link for a free consult:

You need some work experience, they won't really be able to evaluate your potential without this. Of course try and achieve a high score on the GMAT but the big hole for you is work experience

You work experience will definitely be the shortest pole in the tent so to speak. At the same time, you probably want to deal with the gmat earlier than Nov. it seems a bit late and as things tend to pet pushed out, could easily be January and that's too late even for R2.

Good luck!
