few year back when a couple got married wife was 5 years older than her husband.However 20 years back the wife was twice as old as her husband.how old is the wife now ??

Here is how you can do it without assuming x:

A few yrs back, wife was 5 yrs older than her husband. It means she was always and will always remain 5 yrs older than her husband. This difference will never change since they both age by 1 year every year!

When will the wife be twice husband's age but be only 5 yrs older? When the wife is 10 and husband is 5.
So 20 yrs back, wife was 10 yrs old. So now, she must be 10 + 20 = 30 yrs old.

it was really a very helpful .. thank you very much apu

Dear Liquidaci18,
I'm not sure whether this is a GMAT question, because it doesn't have answer choices. In general, this forum is for genuine GMAT questions, but I will make an exception here and show you how to do this. :-)

The wife is 5 years older than the husband. Notice, that relationship stays the same at all times --- as long as we are looking at husband & wife at the same time, whether that is 20 years ago or now or 20 years in the future, the wife will be 5 years older than the husband. That's the sort of thing that never changes between two people.

Let's say the husband's age 20 years ago was x. The wife would have had to have been (x + 5), five years older than the husband. We are told that, at this point, the wife's age, (x + 5) is twice the husband's age,
x + 5 = 2x
5 = x
Twenty years ago, the husband was 5 years old and the wife, 10 years old. Somewhat unlikely marital ages in the modern world. Anyway, fast forward 20 years --- the husband is now 25, and the wife is now 30. That's the answer.

Does all this make sense?
Mike :-)
thank you mikemcgarry :)
