Q: But how do I explain all this? How do I explain the transition from real estate to finance?

A: Just like you did, but with more "art" to it. You also would stress commonalities between roles (how you used one job to help the others), and if necessary, take some liberties here and there.

Q: Also, is family business experience counted as a gap? How do I go about this in my application?

A: Not a gap at all. It's still work experience. Depending on how you describe your pre-MBA trajectory, you can include a little explanation in the optional essay section.

It's really advisable to get someone to look at your essays or at least talk through this in more detail. Please reach out if you want to chat:

Hello everyone!

I have scored a 730 in GMAT and I'm looking to apply using this score for an MBA.

But, here's the thing.

I completed my undergrad way back in 2018 in India and i always wanted to pursue an MBA because of my interest in finance. So, Post my graduation, I started working as an accountant in a local firm in my hometown. I worked there for a couple of years. But, due to family reasons, I had to leave that job and decided to join my family business which is a real estate construction firm and I've been working there since. But now, since my family situation is better and i am in a position to go and fulfill my dream of pursuing an MBA in finance, I thought of giving the GMAT and I got a 730.

But how do I explain all this? How do I explain the transition from real estate to finance? Also, is family business experience counted as a gap? How do I go about this in my application?

Hello gi_2768,

You have quite a journey! With R2 deadlines in less than 2 weeks, we need to understand your last 5 years in detail. This includes everything that you have done right from your work experience at a real estate firm to your family business and beyond. Your work experience in your family business is accounted for in your MBA applications. However, we only need to connect the dots between a switch from real estate to finance.

We recommend getting on a call with you for a free profile consultation sessionand discussing in detail your journey with our MBA experts who are themselves graduates from top schools. Understanding your profile and goals will help them build a plan of action ahead for you.
