If the question is in what way I solve the quant tasks I can explain:
1. First I rewrite the question on the paper and make a diagram/table/schema
2. Then I analyze trying to remember the pattern suitable for that
3. If I found the pattern I start to solve following that
4. If not I try to combine some suitable approches
5. If they don't work I become nervous
6. If all above were useless I try to invent a new approach
7. And if even after all my attempts I lost my belief I try to check 5 answers seeking plausible one.
Sometimes my calculated answer doesn't coincide with any 5 ones. in this case I start to find a flaw. Usually I missed something like diameter instead radius etc.
That's my way, people...

How do you guys approach a quant problem?

Cautiously and with a 10 foot pole!

Regarding prepartion I could say that in the past I was a math fan that's why I didn't spend much time for quant but just memorized english math terms and researched combinations and permutations cause they were my only gaps in general math. Preparing to my 2nd test I spent a week for solving all quant questions of OG11. I hope it's enough because on my 1st GMAT I got Q49.

haha

I start writing down the problem right away, I haven't found many cases while practicing where they give extraneous information. After I'm done writing, I read it over again to make sure I'm trying to solve the correct problem.

Jimmy,

I think it depends on your comfort level with the types of problems. If you know a type of problem cold, then go attack at it. When you hit a bump, or the question doesn't flow, start to think of what else you could have done. Alternatively, if you hit a question and breeze through, DOUBLECHECK to see you didn't fall in a trap.

Most problems are prety straightforward, however most have a trick and if you are not EXTREMELY careful you will fall in that trap and feel content. Don't ever feel content with a problem. If you don't notice a trick in the problem, or on DS you are choosing C or E, you need to really really check yourself. However there are easy problems at the high Q level that you will go , are you serious? One problem in the middle I checked like 5 times because it was so blatantly easy. Like 6th grade straightforward math problem with no tricks.
