I’m writing an argumentative essay where I have to take a clear position, but I’m having trouble with the counterargument section. My professor expects us to acknowledge the other side instead of simply explaining why our own position is correct.
The problem is that whenever I add the opposing view, I either spend too much time on it or end up making my own argument less convincing. I’ve been looking at a few sample argumentative essays and comparing different writing approaches. I also came across CollegeEssay while looking at essay examples and writing resources, but I’m mainly trying to understand what makes the structure work rather than looking for someone to write it.
For those who have written this type of essay, how do you decide how much attention to give the opposing argument? Do you present the counterargument first and then respond to it, or work it into the body paragraphs?
