I am planning to take the tests from Kaplan Comprehensive 2006 book. What is its difficulty level compared to the real test? Is there a ballpark correlation between the scores (if I get x in Kaplan, I can expect x+50 in the real thing)?

There are many posts in this forum about Kaplan score... you can just search for them.
Though I don't know which is the "toughest" exam, Kaplan is for sure harder than real GMAT
you can use the score estimator tool provided by this site to convert your Kaplan score into probable GMAT score.

I haven't heard specifically of the Kaplan "comprehensive" book but yes, in general, their tests are supposed to be a lot harder. I wouldn't use them to predict anything. If you want to get a realistic idea of how you'd really do, rely on GMATPrep tests or Princeton Review tests. Much more realistic.
