This might have been answered before, but I cannot find it anywhere. I took the first Exam in the Prep software, and got 20 Quant questions incorrect and about 16 Verbal incorrect- ended up with a 490 (expected)
Took the second exam a month and half later, had a lot of practice in the middle, went through the OG and the extra practice in Prep Pack, got 16 questions incorrect in Quant and 17 incorrect in verbal score- 490
Leaving aside the real de motivation, I am wondering how the software score your results- the second test was far better than the first, I got most of the first ten questions correct in verbal and math, and I even got a better score in math. How is it possible for my percentile to be lower with a better quant score! and my overall score to be the same!
It would be great if someone could shed some light on this..

Well... nobody really knows how the Official GMAT algorithm works. There are a lot of snippets but no official explanation.
GMAT Prep is supposed to be a close resemblance of it without giving away the secret sauce (in case someone deconstructs it).
Anyway, that't a long way of saying - who knows. We do know that several things come into play:
1. Harder questions answered correctly result in higher score
2. First questions are important
3. Getting easy questions wrong results in lower score
4. The number of correct answers is not closely correlated to the score
