At
MBA Admit.com, many of our EMBA candidates have a major flaw in their profile that has them very concerned about whether they can get into a top EMBA program. So. if you are wondering if you will be able to override a very notable flaw, such as a very low college GPA, in order to gain admission to a top EMBA program, the answer is yes, many times that is quite possible. The key is to identify and present your most impressive achievements, credentials and attributes, to direct attention away from your weaknesses toward those assets, and to present a compelling portrait of your future.
Here is a case-in-point:
Candidate A: This candidate was in his early thirties and had worked for only medium-sized companies. However, with his fourth medium-sized employer, he worked his way to become the CFO.
Age: Early thirties.
GPA: 2.3 from a state school
GMAT Score: 680 with a solid quant score
Citizenship: USA
# Years WE/Industry: 14 years including full-time work during college.
Extracurricular activities: This candidate showed great leadership through his organization of many charitable events in his company.
General Assessment, Strengths/Weaknesses: This candidate had achieved the designation of CFO at a very young age, so we were able to draw on this as a major selling point. His achievement of organizing the charitable work of his company made him stand out. In his prior employers, he had also played great leadership roles, which was a great selling point. We were able to showcase a great breadth and depth of leadership achievements. The candidate also had a strong personal story. During college, the candidate had to pay his way through college and to do this he started his own company. The entrepreneurship experience from this period was a plus. His ability to persevere and put himself through college was also a plus. His need to work full-time during college helped to address his low GPA and his solid GMAT score helped give the admissions committee a different metric that indicated he could succeed in their program (many EMBA candidates have a hard time achieving a 680 GMAT score).
His main weaknesses included his GPA, which was very low for someone seeking admission to Columbia’s EMBA program, which is one of the most competitive programs around. For most candidates, a 2.3 GPA would have meant an automatic rejection. The fact that he had only worked for medium-sized companies could also be a negative at a school like Columbia, which sometimes demonstrates a preference for candidates from large-scale or multinational companies.
MBA Admit.com Strategy: We focused on this candidate’s many strengths – including his ability to gain his degree while working full time, his entrepreneurial success, his leadership roles in multiple companies and his CFO role/title. We highlighted his great community work. We made his long-term goal very attractive. We worked with his recommendation writers to ensure his recommendations worked fully for him and helped to indirectly address his low GPA. We prepped him excellently in multiple interview prep sessions and paid particular attention to how he would address concerns about his GPA.
Outcome: Admitted to Columbia’s EMBA program!
