(I'm reposting this due to an error I made).
Hi,
This is a tale of great frustration and time and money wasted and eventual success. I'm sharing my experience so that I an hopefully help someone else out there and spare you a lot of frustration.
I consider myself a pretty smart guy. I graduated with a technical degree from a reputable university. I studied for the GMAT for several months on my own initially. I used Kaplan books and some others. I then took a practice exam and only scored a 510. Both my quant and verbal sections were about even. I was crushed.
My goal is to attend a top MBA program, so I wanted to be at 700+. I then decided to try a couple of different online courses and one in- person course. I used e-GMAT,
Magoosh, and
Manhattan GMAT. All three courses were of some value but after spending a lot of money on all three and a lot of time, I took the actual GMAT exam and only scored 580. Needless to say, I felt very depressed. I spend a lot of money and a lot of time without having too much improvement.
At this point I was ready to give up so I took a break for a month. After some encouragement from my parents and my friends and a recommendation from someone else who had used a tutor, I ended up calling a very good (reknown) GMAT / GRE tutor & Applications consultant. This was not cheap, but when you consider the overall amount of money and time I had already spent on prep classes and the amount of time I spent on other education and what I was willing to spend on my business degree, it was worth every penny. The tutor completely changed my outlook on the exam. He started with trying to understand what my strengths and weaknesses were. He taught me a lot of tricks tips that I didn't see anywhere else and most importantly he targeted the whole program to my needs not some generic one-size-fits-all class.
The tutor is named Steve and you can reach him by email. stevestutoring at gmail dot com. His site is stevestutoring dot com. I ended up scoring a 720 with Steve's help.
if I could do this all over again, I would have skipped every step and just started with the tutor and only worked with him. I would've saved a lot of frustration, time, and money.
Hope all of this helps someone. Feel free to send me a message if you like and I'll be happy to help.
Best wishes and good luck!
