Hi all,

I am looking for some advice.

May I know whether higher-ranked B-schools (e.g. top 10) may look deeply into the breakdown of GMAT scores?

I just took the GMAT today and got 720 (94th percentile). The breakdown is V = 41 (94th percentile), Q = 48 (67the percentile) and IR = 7 (79th percentile). The AWA is pending assessment. This is my 1st GMAT attempt. I am concerned that top schools may question why my Q score is so low, especially given that I am a Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Graduate (4.36/5 cGPA at NTU, Singapore).

Would you advise me to re-take the GMAT after a Q-focussed preparation?

Hello cosmon hope you are doing well

Business schools do take into consideration the break up of your GMAT score, although the same is evaluated jointly with the other aspects of your profile such as undergrad GPA, métier/subject stream, and school ranking. 720 overall is a good score, but I think this could go either way especially if you are targeting a top US MBA program. The schools evaluate your academic (and GMAT verbal and quantitative) performance with that of other applicants from your country in order to determine where you stand. Since we do not know about your nationality, it is hard to comment on the odds. If you belong to an overrepresented demographic, I would recommend a re-take.

If you have a very impressive overall profile and are more inclined towards a Non-US top-ranked school, you could very well manage an admit with a 720, although a higher quant score will surely be better.

Hello cosmon,

Top-ranked schools do consider individual break-ups and a lower quant may raise some concerns. If this is your first GMAT attempt and you are targetting top-notch US programs, you must consider retaking the GMAT while focusing on your quant score, specifically.

Schools are definitely interested in score breakdowns, but a Q48 is a borderline elite Quant score, and every MBA program in the world accepts Q48 level test takers. You really should ignore the corresponding Quant percentiles, because Quant scores differ dramatically by country, and unless you're from the one country in the world with a Q50 average score, your Q48 will be very strong. That said, you're almost certainly capable of a higher Quant score if you prepare the right way, and if you're confident you can score V41+ again, then you should be able to get a slightly higher overall score, which might be helpful if you're applying to top schools. But your Q score right now shouldn't be an issue anywhere. Good luck!

Do not be overly concerned right now and make sure you take the exam again. There is little to no downside to giving the GMAT a second attempt. At the very least, you have this score "banked," which works since they count your highest for admission.

In your preparation to take the GMAT again, make sure you understand why you scored so low on the Q component. You won't be able to get the exam back but if you can self-diagnose the issues by way of practice exams and questions, that should help. The good news is that the GMAT rewards balance so given the disparity between your Q and V scores now, if you can increase the Q a bit more it should have an outsized effect on your overall score.
