I did terrible on the AWA portion of my retake - scored a FOUR 
So how important is the AWA? Do I need to address this in the optional essay? Any opinion?
PS: I must really work on my essays now- the AWA has just demotivated me

What did you get the 1st time? I am sure a lot of schools don't really care since a lot of people put minimal effort into the AWA. Though I have heard that 4 is the break point anything below that some schools will actually read your essays to compare the writing to your application essays if your app essays are extremely well written. Thats more of a check to see if you actually wrote you application essays.
I know I could have done a lot better on my AWA but I didn't prep for it at all and blew through them without much worry and got a 5 which sucks percentage wise but I was fine with that since my verbal was strong.

I would have thought that a score of 4 is fine, and that schools wouldn't be very fussed about that. As long as your overall score was good, and your school application essays read well, then I wouldn't be overly concerned. Those GMAT essays are such a small component of the overall application...
