Hi Leadership and MBAPrepCoach

Thank you very much for your replies and advice. I think I'll apply later and work on improving my quant score.

Hi all,

I took my 1st attempt at the GMAT earlier this week and scored a 710 (Q43, V44). I was quite happy with the results given that I hadn’t had enough time to thoroughly study all the Quant material, even though I had taken some days off work to prepare for the test. I’ve been studying since summer 2019 but have been following a proper Quant study plan only since October, and it’s been difficult to find enough quality time to focus on my preparation because of long work schedules.

The average GMAT score in the full-time MBA programmes I want to apply to ranges from 700 to 710, so I guess that my score would look OK to AdComs. However, I am concerned about my IR score and how it could affect my application. I really hadn’t had time to prepare for it, and I had a cold and started feeling a bit ill during the final stage of the test, so my performance wasn’t the best and ran out of time. I got a 4/8, which is not a good score. My concern is that it could raise a red flag during my application process and put my candidacy at risk.

Is IR something that B-schools actually pay attention to? I feel like I could also improve my general score if I took the test again, and I would definitely improve IR. Would you recommend me to take the GMAT again?

At this point I can either 1) apply in R3/R4 in the following weeks or 2) apply in R1 in 6 months and try to improve my score in the following months.

Any advice would be really appreciated :)

Thanks!

Hello kento22,

Thanks for your query.

While a 4 on the IR is low, it is not really a major concern. We quite agree with the opinions above. Focus on improving your quant score and apply to the earlier rounds of your target schools.

All the best! :-)

Don’t do it. since your GMAT score is right in the range of school averages that your target schools will have, focusing on your application is more important.
A below-average IR score might be a red flag to a business school but my advice would be against retaking the GMAT for that alone if you have scored over a 700 on the test.
Will the business schools prefer an applicant that would have a better IR score and a similar GMAT score as yours? Probably. But having an average score like 4/8 on your IR doesn’t create a huge discrepancy that cannot be explained away.
Since you’re planning to apply to schools where your GMAT score would be considered a competitive one, the real advantage for you now would be applying to round 1 rather than improving your GMAT score.
