How long would it take 5 typists to type thirty pages if all 5 typists type at the same speed?
(1) One typist can type four pages in 30 minutes.
(2) Three typists can type eight pages in 20 minutes.
The question is to find the time taken by 5 typists to type 30 pages. If we can find the time taken by 5 typists to type 1 page, then to type 30 pages, we have to multiply this time by 30.
Statement 1:One typist can type four pages in 30 minutes.
With this we can see that 1 typist to type 1 page = 30/4 = 7.5 minutes (Less work, lesser time)
Therefore 5 Typists to type 1 page = 7.5/5 = 1.5 minutes (More people less time)
Time taken by 5 typists to type 30 pages = 1.5 * 30 = 45 minutes (More work, more time)
Therefore Statement 1 Alone is Sufficient. Answer options could be A or D
Statement 2: Three typists can type eight pages in 20 minutes.
Time taken by 3 typists to type 8 pages = 20 minutes
Time taken by 1 typist to type 8 page = 20 * 3 = 60 minutes (Lesser people, more time)
Therefore , time taken by 1 typist to type 1 page = 60/8 = 7.5 minutes
Again with the data above, we can calculate the time taken for 5 typists to type 30 pages.
Therefore Statement 2 Alone is Sufficient.
