How many crayons were distributed?
a. When distributed to 7 children evenly, remainder is 4
b. When distributed to 4 children evenly, remainder is 2
I thought answer is C
a. 7X+4 in sufficient
b. 4Y +2 Insufficnet
A and B together
X = 1 Number of Crayons = 11 Divided by 4 Remainder = 3
X = 2 = 18 = 2
Answer is 18
Is this correct?
In my opinion the answer is
E. Explaination as follows.
Case 1): Insufficient - Assume that X crayons were evenly distributed among 7 children and the reminder is 4 so the total number of crayons = 7X + 4. In this case X could be any number e.g. 2, 3 etc.
Case 2): Insufficient - Assume that X crayons were evenly distributed among 4 children and the reminder is 2 so the total number of crayons = 4X + 2
Again in this case X could be any number e.g. 2, 3 etc.
Case 1 & 2): Insufficient - From case 1 we know that the total number of crayons = 7X + 4. Now according to case 2, these crayons are to be evenly distributed among 4 children with 2 crayons remaining. Considering this for my convenience I divided 7X + 4 into two parts 4X and 3X + 4. Part 1 (4X) crayons can be evenly distributed among 4 children as it is divisible by 4. Now from the remaining part 2 (3X + 4) crayons, we have to distribute 3X + 2 crayons evenly among 4 children so that 2 crayons will remain. TO fulfil this condition 3X + 2 must be divisible by 4. by plugging different numbers I realized that X can be 2, 6 or 10, etc.
I hope this makes sense. Please let me know if my answer is wrong.
