As a rule - the number of marbles equal to LCM of (9 and 5) + the first common number of marbles(43).
So the possible solution would be in the form of = 45K + 43 (where K=1,2,3...)

Hence neither statement alone, nor both the statement together are sufficient to answer this question.

each statement alone is insufficient ...
combining we again have as many combinations
as per (1) let x nos. of marbles doug divided into each portion then
5x+3 of total marbles
similarly from (2) 9x+7 marbles he have
x could be any value ...thus individually insuff...

combining both
so if x =4 then 9x+7 = 43

or if x =9 then 9x+7 = 88

5x+3 = 3, 8, 13, 18, 23, 28, 33, 38, 43, 48.. .. 133
9x+7 = 7, 16, 25, 34, 43, 52, 61, 70.... 133

x = 43, 133 ...

A) T=5x+3

T=13,18 NS

B)T=9x+7
T=16,25 NS

MERGE: T=5x+3

T=9x+7
2T=14x+10>>>T=7x+5

hence still NS so *E*

can we take equations as 5x+3 and 9y+7? Please let me where I could be going wrong?

I solved this question by listing out the multiples of 5x+3 and 9y+7, and then concluding that there will be multiple values for the total number of marbles i.e. 43, 88, etc. However, this approach took over 2 mins.

For similar questions, can I simply reason that if a question doesn't provide any constraints for the total number, there is bound to be multiple values?

Appreciate your input!
