Target question: How many pairs of shoes does Eileen have?
Statement 1: If Eileen had 8 more pairs, she would have three times as many as she actually has.
Let x = the number of pairs of shoes Eileen CURRENTLY has
From the given information, we can write x + 8 = 3x
Solve to get: x = 4
So, Eileen owns 4 pairs of shoes
Since we can answer the target question with certainty, statement 1 is SUFFICIENT
Statement 2: If Eileen acquires one more pair, the number of pairs she has will increase by 25 percent
Let x = the number of pairs of shoes Eileen CURRENTLY has
From the given information, we can write x + 1 = x + (25% more than x)
Rewrite as: x + 1 = x + 0.25x
Or: x + 1 = 1.25x
Subtract x from both sides: 1 = 0.25x
Solve to get: x = 4
So, Eileen owns 4 pairs of shoes
Since we can answer the target question with certainty, statement 2 is SUFFICIENT
Answer: D
