Hi,

A quick question. I am from Delhi, India and I am planning to give the GMAT next year and apply next year only. I want to study in Canada. I have heard that generally universities require 16 years of education, but in India we only get 15 years of education [except Science/Engineering courses].

Does that mean that I'll have to do a 1 Year diploma course and then apply for MBA?
Or 15 years of education + 2 years of work ex + GMAT score is enough?

Don't worry about the # of years leading to a bachelors degree. As long as you have a bachelors, it is less relevant how many years it took you (if you got it earlier than the average). However 2 years is on the low end. I recommend 3-4 years before applying.

Email me if you want to chat about advanced planning for your applications so you have the right profile once it is time to apply. scott@personalmbacoach.com

Hi ronit1894,

Few countries such as India, UK, Pakistan, Australia, and New Zealand commonly award 3-year non-engineering and non-medical degrees, which was, no doubt, a big problem for applicants to MBA programs (requiring 16 years of education as the eligibility criterion).

But this has changed a lot in the last few years. Most schools (Haas is a prominent exception) have done away with this requirement now. Since this requirement is very uncommon these days, there isn’t a point in studying for a year just for the sake of fulfilling the eligibility criteria of 1-2 exceptions. In my opinion, it’s better to drop those 1-2 schools from your target list.

(You’ll generally find the school-specific information in this regard in the FAQ section on the Admissions page of the school’s website.)
