How many years old will Fred be y years from now?
(1) Doris is 12 years older than Fred.
(2) The sum of the ages of Doris and Fred is y years.

Please assist with above problem.

Answer is E.

Let the age of Fred = F.

Age y years from now = F + y -- (1)

Statement 1 : D = F + 12. No Value of D or F. Insufficient.

Statement 2 : D + F = y. Again, insufficient. We don't have the value of D or F.

Combining, F + 12 + F = y

or 2F = y - 12

or F = (y-12)/2

Substitute the value of F in Equation (1) above,

Age y years from now = F + y = (y-12)/2 + y.

Again, no value of y is known. Hence, insufficient.
