With our upcoming MBA Spotlight Virtual MBA Fair just around the corner, we wanted to take you inside the walls of some of the top business schools (B Schools) that will be participating in our event. Our first stop on this journey is the Indian School of Business (ISB).
ISB was established in 2001 and was founded based on the anticipated need for leadership in the progressive Asian economies. While ISB is considered one of the newer schools, its notoriety is immense. They are the only Business School from India to figure in the top 25 global, ranked #23 in the world and #5 amongst Asian business schools. Furthermore, after receiving the AMBA in May 2020, they became the 100th Triple Accredited business school in the world ( EQUIS, AACSB, AMBA).
I was able to speak with the Sr. Manager of ISB’s Admissions and Financial Aide Department, Jibby James. James told me about ISB and what the academic year ahead has in store for potential candidates. “ISB’s mission is to excel in research and to provide cutting-edge curriculum, specializations, and electives to incoming students.” James also noted ISB diversity saying that ISB offers incoming students a global student platform. “Our students are not just from India, they are from all over the globe. This is also true of many of the professors at the school as they have allied with the following top business schools: Kellogg, Wharton, London Business School (LBS), MIT, and Fletcher. Professors from this school will stay and teach for an entire course. There are over 200 visiting faculty that come from abroad to teach the various courses.”
ISB, along with these top 5 B-Schools, work together designing the curriculum, choosing the specializations and electives, deciding what the faculty and student exchange will look like and what kind of cutting-edge research will happen. “Our world-class faculty is completely research-focused, which is how we can ensure that we have a cutting edge curriculum in place,” James said. “We have an integrated learning model which means that while we focus on learning inside the classroom, we also focus on learning outside the classroom.”
Learning inside the classroom follows a case-based methodology and offers 10 specializations which include the 6 core specializations as well as 4 specific industry specializations:
Marketing
Operations
Finance
Entrepreneurship
Strategy & leadership
Information Technology
Public Policy
Health Care
Infrastructure
Manufacturing
All of these specializations have been chosen by ISB in collaboration with the B-Schools and are taught in a 1-year time frame.
Outside of the classroom, ISB offers students an Experiential Learning Program (ELP). “ELP is really what ISB is well known for. ELP begins in the 5th term of the program, which differs from a normal internship given the 1-year time frame. Instead, ELP students work on projects in the domain of their interest with a company through ISB.” James explained that in doing this the student will be working on a company’s real-life problem as a consultant. The student will be using the tools they have acquired at ISB and working alongside both a college and a company mentor and will try to help the company solve their problem. This hands-on experience is a great opportunity for the student.
ISB has two campuses, one is in Hyderabad and is spread across 260 acres. It offers students an academic center, a recreation center, and 4 student villages that hold up to 600 students.
ISB’s other campus is in Mohali and offers students academic block houses, lecture theatres, faculty offices and lounges, a learning resource center (LRC), and an atrium that can serve as a 500-seat auditorium. Mahali holds up to 300 students.
Each campus functions very much the same with the only difference being the size of the student body. Both campuses offer incubation centers, which offer students who are moving in an entrepreneurial desire after their post-graduate program is complete, an opportunity to stay on campus for 11 more months to set up their entrepreneurial venture and get started. Along with this ISB offers this student a stipend during this time.
Whichever campus you choose, ISB offers a very diverse setting having students from many various backgrounds working together to allow students to see things from another person’s viewpoint. “We tend to think differently based on our background and the environment from which we come. Different people coming in from different walks of life approach the same problem in a very different way,” said James.
If you like what ISB has to offer, but you are worried at your GMAT or GRE score is not high enough to get in, James says that your score is only one part of their selection process. “ISB looks at all aspects of your application. We do not look at just the test scores, we look at the person’s complete application. Each section of the application form has a particular score attached to it. The overall profile score is what we look at to make our selection.”
The opportunities at ISB are endless. If you would like to learn more about this school or any of the other top schools, be sure to sign up for GMAT Clubs MBA Spotlight today.
