One concern I have is regarding research I need to do on schools. How much research do I need to do understand the schools really well? For example, from Duke's website and brochure I felt that they value team approach and extracurriculars as a way to learn about leadership and team dynamics. Since I am an international applicant, visiting these schools is not possible for me. Hence, I need to rely on information available online.
Is this research enough? Do you think there is a significant difference in school cultures? I might be equally happy to get into Duke or Cornell. Is this because of my lack of awareness of difference in cultures?

Duke and Cornell are VERY different. I'm not sure about academics (I haven't looked into Cornell at all) but I know that location-wise, the dirty South of Durham, NC is quite a contrast to completely-isolated Ithaca, NY. I would be absolutely miserable at Cornell... not because of the school, but simply because of tbe location. Ergo, IMO, you need to look a bit more deeply; at least beyond the surface of how the brochures describe the schools' acamdeics.

I would recommend you call the admissions office or look on their website for student contact info and give them a call. A quick 30-60 minute talk on the phone with a student or alum will give you treasure troves worth of info to help you decide.
