Hi all,
I'm just wondering, how much weight business schools place on GMAT scores compared to your overall package. I ask this because I'm 4 weeks away from my test date, and I'm not feeling confident about it at all! I'm hoping my other attributes will be able to make up for my score (granted I score under 600 - or even 500 as a worst case scenario)...
Other information about me:
- BS in business administration (concentration in marketing), 2.9 overall GPA, 3.2 major.
- 2 years international experience with one of the top Fortune 500 FMCG's, from which I have 2 recommendors.
- Above average essays.
- Lots of extracurricular/intellectual curiosity (reflected in wide range of electives on transcripts).
- Proficiency in 2 languages.
- Mixed race (American + Arab), as well as dual citizen
- 100% guaranteed to receive full scholarship from government (not US of course) upon receiving acceptance from a program.
I'm not applying to any top 10 schools, but I am applying to a few fairly competitive schools, e.g. UC Davis, UC Irvine, and others similarly ranked... So would I have a chance at all of being accepted with a poor GMAT score?

It's hard to give you a completely bulletproof answer on this, since every school is a little bit different when it comes to their admissions policies. Some schools will be thrilled to admit a 100%-sponsored, Arabic-speaking applicant with solid experience, and they'll look the other way--to some degree--when it comes to the GMAT. Other programs are trying like crazy to climb the US News & World Report rankings, and GMAT averages are a substantial component of those rankings... unfortunately.
The bigger problem I see is with your GPA. By itself, a 2.9 wouldn't necessarily destroy your chances of getting into the schools that you mentioned, but you would need a strong GMAT score to compensate for the GPA. Again, some schools might be excited enough about your national origins (especially if you come from a particularly small, underrepresented country) to give you the benefit of the doubt, but I think you might have a rough time if you aren't at least close to the 25%-75% GMAT score ranges for the schools that you're interested in.
So please go kick the crap out of the GMAT so that you don't have to worry about any of this.

Please don’t just focus on nailing out the gmat. I’ve seen many people with low GPA with damn near perfect GMAT scores get rejected everywhere because their work experience was trash.
Your GMAT score is not the only thing you need to worry about. You also gotta think about their employment stats business schools. Need to have confidence that you’re going to place and get a job after you go there. Please don’t listen to the bad advice that you just need to nail out the gmat. Your chances of getting in will be contingent also on your work experience.
If you had a crap GPA and crap work experience and a damn near perfect GRE or GMAT you’re not getting in.
