I have been doing a ton of MBA interview prep with candidates this month and there is a mistake I see candidates make surprisingly frequently.
When asked "Why MBA?", they eagerly launch into "Why school x".
I understand the eagerness to tell the school why they are your number one but not paying close attention to what is asked is not a good approach. "Why MBA?", "Why our school?", and "Why now?" are three distinct questions.
From the very start of your MBA application process, you need to have the answers to these questions developed separately and clearly. They are related but don't completely overlap.
Defining your “why MBA” means taking stock of where you are now in your career, where you want to be, and what is the gap between the two. The MBA – the right type of MBA program that is a great fit for you - should be what bridges the gap.
Some MBA programs will ask “why MBA” in the essays or short answer questions too. The same approach applies whether you are talking about your motivation to do an MBA in the essays or the interview.
