Hello,
I recently took the official GMAT for the first time and scored 650 (V31 Q48). I plan to take the exam again as I believe this score may be an outlier. While the Quant section was within an expected range, I was utterly shocked at the verbal result given my previous practice attempts:
670 - Q47 V35 (within first two weeks of study)
680 - Q49 V33 (100 hours of studying and minimal dedication to Verbal at this point)
730 - Q49 V41 (within two weeks of exam following intensive Verbal work with
Manhattan prep books and
Magoosh software)
710 - Q49 V38 (4 days before exam)
710 - Q49 V39 (2 days before exam)
Prior to the last 3 prep exams, I had dedicated ~200 hours to studying. All of these were official GMAT prep tests and I took all of them under the same conditions and at the same time of day as the real exam. I even completed the preps and real GMAT in the same order (Verbal, Quant, IR and AWA). Nothing deviated from expectations or preparations ahead of actual GMAT exam. Additionally, I felt mentally clear and sharp on exam day. Nothing really surprised me on the verbal section so I felt confident that the score would be similar. The level of difficulty seemed to be similar to preps and I felt that I picked upon most of the patterns and tricks I had learned to identify. Nothing was different in my timing as the whole exam felt natural and comfortable.
Naturally, I was surprised to see my score for verbal and have no explanation as to why this occurred. I generally do well under pressure and felt confident in the exam room. If anyone has any advice or possibly an explanation as to how I could achieve such a relatively low score on the GMAT, I would greatly appreciate it. I plan on taking the exam again and want to better understand how I can improve, or if I should just simply discount this outcome as an anomaly.
Thanks,
Griffin
