Is “I want to move into consulting” enough of a career goal for an INSEAD application?
This is something we have been asked by applicants lately.
A lot of applicants have a strong profile, but when it comes to career goals, the story becomes quite broad:
“I want to move into consulting.”
“I want to work in tech.”
“I want to transition into strategy.”
There’s nothing wrong with these goals, but the more important question is:
why does this goal make sense for you?
For an INSEAD application, I think it’s worth asking yourself:
- What in my career so far has led me toward this next step?
- What specifically am I missing that an MBA can help me develop?
- Why does INSEAD make sense for this particular transition?
- Can I explain my short-term goal without pretending I have my entire career mapped out?
You don't necessarily need a perfectly predictable 10-year plan. But there should be a logical connection between where you've been, why you need an MBA now, and where you want to go next.
We’re also discussing this with Shimri Winters and Jenifer Turtschanow along with other INSEAD application questions during a Live Coffee session on 17 September at 8:30 PM IST / 8:00 AM PDT.
It should be a useful conversation for anyone currently working through their application or unsure whether their story is coming together clearly.
