Is it possible to prepare a successful Round 2 application if you only have weeks before the Round 2 deadlines? Yes! You may be surprised to know how many candidates wait until their two-week break from work at the end of December to begin their application preparations. With high-demand jobs, they often cannot otherwise find the time. Similarly, many applicants wait to hear the results of their Round 1 applications and don’t know until mid-December that they have not yet secured a seat in a top MBA program. So, if you are just getting started, you are not alone! Assuming you have your GMAT score or will be taking it soon, you can certainly put together a winning application if you plan and execute well.
Here are the top steps you should take to prepare before many of the Round 2 MBA deadlines arrive.
1. Approach recommendation writers. We place this as #1 when Round 2 deadlines are only weeks away, because with the December vacation period looming when many recommendation writers will likely be unavailable, you should make sure you have approached your recommendation writers and get them “on board” for writing for you. The lack of accessibility of recommendation writers can potentially be a reason why you miss a Round 2 deadline, so this is a very important step. Let your recommendation writers know when you will need a draft from them and coordinate around their vacation schedules.
2. Compose a list of target schools. In doing this, you should consider whether you are a strong shot for admission or whether the designated school(s) represents a “reach school” for you. If you want to attend business school next year, your list of target schools should include some surer-shot schools, reach schools and at least one safety school.
If you need assistance determining your competitiveness at various schools, consider getting feedback through our free profile evaluation. Fill out the profile evaluation form on our homepage at

3. Create a timeline. If you will be applying to multiple schools for Round 2, this is particularly important. Determine what your top school choices are, consider their respective deadlines and look over their required essay questions. With this information, set out a schedule for yourself so that you make sure you can finish one application excellently and then move on to the next application, leveraging whatever content is relevant. You don’t want to miss deadlines because you failed to pace your work.
4. Research your target schools. Do more in-depth research about the programs offered by your target MBA programs, scouring their website, chats, webinars and blogs, and reaching out to alumni members or current students. Draw on what you learn as you write your essays.
5. Think through your long-term and short-term goals. You should refine your written statements about your long-term and short-term goals, which are typically asked for in the MBA applications. You want both your long-term and short-term goals to work for you as great assets in the MBA admissions process.
6. Choose a consultant. If you plan to work with a consultant, sign up soon so that the consultant can help you maximize your efforts over the next weeks. Clarify when the consultant will be available during the holidays and plan out a schedule for getting your needed work done.
7. Begin drafting! Start writing your MBA essays. The MBA application is considered your “marketing package” and you want your essays to be outstanding.
