Great question. We’ve had a wave of horror stories about two or three weeks ago and those seem to have subsided. I think there was some stupidity or misunderstanding with proctors being too ferocious and going beyond the call of duty in policing.
At the same time, with GMAT moving to a new provider, I can see proctors being a little bit more relaxed since they probably hardly care. I wouldn’t count on it though but I think it will be more relaxed than three weeks ago.
If you’re using a laptop that is a good distance away and you’re not scribbling on your knees or doing things under the desk, I think there’s a good chance your camera will have your face. I would practice. Get the camera app on windows, and record yourself doing a couple questions on the whiteboard in front of the computer.
I would look for two things, first can you see your face OK and how low do you Lien when you write. Second I would check if they can see your whiteboard on the camera. It’s not a requirement but I feel you will be less likely interrupted if they can kind of peek at it and while your face may not be perfectly visible they I can see that you were actively working and not just leaning in and whispering to your friend hiding underneath the desk.
It is good you are preparing for this but I wouldn’t over index on the potential interruptions. I still think it’s a small percentage.
PS. My piece of advice, if you do get interrupted by the proctor and that throws you off enough or perhaps experience a technical issue that gets resolved but causes you to lose precious minutes of time, turn off your computer. I’m not kidding, that’s your only recourse. Unless your face a technical interruption such as a catastrophic failure, your test will be completed and will be graded and will be counted as one of two aloud attempts. The only way to preserve and ensure that you’re given a fair chance is to sabotage it in case things don’t go right. Otherwise you’re going to have to call GMAT, file cases and maybe, maybe they will grant you a free retake. I wouldn’t give them that decision, you can Take control though perhaps in a barbaric way. However, I don’t see a better way to fight the current situation and injustice that it creates.
