Hi Everyone
Recently I have talked with many MBA admission consultant from the free evaluation services of each company. At beginning, I set my target schools to those ranked between 11th and 20th. After talked with several consultants, I shifted the target school to those ranked between 16th and 25th. And many consultants agreed with this target. But one of the consultant seems to be very pessimistic about my profile and suggests me also apply schools ranked 30th - 50th. So I am confused about my profile and don't know which opinion is right. I prefer the majority opinion just because it is majority. But I also have a concern that they tried to be optimistic because they don't want to scare me away.
Do you have any suggestions for this situation? Any thoughts are appreciated!
Brief background:
- Chinese male, 26 years old
- Undergrad education in China: major in Physics, GPA 3.8
- Graduate education in U.S.: major in Computer engineering, GPA 3.3
- GMAT 710 (50Q, 34V), will retake.
- 2yr and 4mon work experience in a software company as globalization engineer, leading projects with different departments and offices globally – no promotions.
- Founded an alumni association of my undergraduate school for the alumnus in North America.
- During undergraduate study, served as vice president of the student union for one year, and served as the coach of a debate team for one year.

Thank you for the post. First, you should ensure the fit is good between you and the consultant you will work with. The relationship is pretty intimate and involved, so that is important to consider. Next, think about the reasons why you got different viewpoints on the schools you should apply to. If the reasoning makes sense and you feel like the consultant will put in the extra time to stretch you, those are good signs. If you heard school ranges without much thought, I would hesitate.
From what I see about your profile, top 20 should be achievable. I may push you even higher but I would have you apply to a range of schools. In terms of how tight that range would be, I have some questions for you:
What school did you go to for undergrad?
What company do you work at now?
What else do you do outside of work?
What are your post-MBA goals?
