Hi, i was lucky enough to go into a buy side gig right after school. (Principal investing arm of a top 3 investment bank) i must also add that i was in a regional office, not london or ny.
So, now i'll be applying to bschool and need to decide on a career goal. (For essays) what i REALLY want is pe aftet mba and it's doable given my pre mba experience. However very difficult.
So which story should i use?
1) land a pe job after mba and advance in pe
2) get an i-banking job for a couple years after mba. Then go into pe (in my home country)
But does #2 make sense? Why would anyone go back to sell side after a top buy side job? On the other hand, since it's an extremely competitive field, will it hinder my chances?
Thx
a03b, these are great questions to be asking yourself. I'm not in finance so can't provide a window into what "makes sense" in terms of career path, but for the application, I would ask you to think about what you want to be doing immediately post-MBA (and in your summer internship as well). Do you want to be in PE (it seems like you do)? Do you want to be in IBD? Will you be okay personally moving from PE where you are now to IBD? For your application, you should be writing about something that is authentic to you. Don't over think what you think will "make sense" to the adcom.
I'll also say that some applications in the past have had essay topics on what option A, B, or C would you want to pursue within your MBA. In that case, you already have your answer.
