Hi!
I've discovered it takes me a very long time to find the answer when the problem asks for a formula, rather than a real number. I was wondering if there's a way I haven't think of. This happens a lot with rate-distance problems, percentages...
I usually solve the problem, then try out each of the answers to see which one works.
Here's an example:
One-tenth employees of a company are VPs. Of the remaining employees, one-third employees are Assistant VPs. If there are e employees, how many are neither VPs, nor Assitant VPs.
1) e/30
2) 2e/5
3) 13e/30
4) 17e/30
5) 3e/5
My solution:
Regular employees = 30/30 (e) - 3/30 (VPs) + 9/30 (Assist. VPs) = 18/30
Then I try out each of the options:
1) 30/30 = 1
2) 60/5 = 12
3) 13
4) 17
5) 3(30)/5 = 18 <--- CORRECT ANSWER!
This is an easy problem, so eliminating answers doesn't take long. Problem is when problem is harder than this one. Is there an easier way?

Total employees "e"
VP's = 1/10 e
AVP's = 1/3 0f remaining i.e 1/3 of 9/10 e = 3/10 e
Rest employees = 1- (1/10 e + 3/10 e) = 6/10 e = 3/5 e.
Then look for ans choices.
VP's = 1/10 e
AVP's = 1/3 0f remaining i.e 1/3 of 9/10 e = 3/10 e
Rest employees = 1- (1/10 e + 3/10 e) = 6/10 e = 3/5 e.

Use Algebra:
# of employees be e.
# of vps = e/10
# of avps = 1/3(9e/10) = 3e/10
Neither vps nor assistant vps = e - e/10 -3e/10 = 3e/5
# of employees be e.
# of vps = e/10
# of avps = 1/3(9e/10) = 3e/10
Neither vps nor assistant vps = e - e/10 -3e/10 = 3e/5
