Hi,
I am a not non-native speaker. I usually get it hard to process the information of RC and CR. It takes me long time.
So I was searching on how to improve reading. I found several articles in gmatclub that are recommending to read some books/magazines. But the problem is I only have 3 weeks left before exam. In this case, should I try to read the books/magazines. or any advice on which strategy will be best ?
Thanks
Hi nazmulhasandu,
It's not that just by developing the reading habit everyday you will be able to ace CR and RC questions. You have to first
- understand what is tested using CR and RC questions,
- understand how to approach them,
- learn the right methodology to solve those questions and then
- practice a few questions to solidify your learning.
How to approach CR questions?
The right way to approach CR questions is to
- Read the argument
- Understand the premises and the conclusion
- Read the question stem
- Identify the missing link
- Eliminate answer choices which are not in-line with your missing link
Understanding premises and the conclusion will help you understand the scope of the argument using which you can eliminate answer choices which are either irrelevant or out of scope. And to develop the ability to pre-think, it's important that you learn the framework and the pre-thinker's guide. There are four frameworks on which most CR questions are based. They are:
- Plan-goal
- Comparison
- Causal relationship
- Quantitative
There is a
webinar scheduled on 27th November on the same topic (
Framework driven Pre-thinking). You can attend to understand the right approach.
How to approach RC questions?
To ace RC questions, it's important that you use certain reading strategies. You have to make sure that you read the passage in an inferential manner so as to understand the author's intention behind writing the passage. Make a mental summary of each para and once you are done with the the entire passage, make the summary of the summaries to derive the main point of the passage.
I hope you have understood the approach using which you have to solve CR and RC questions. Make sure you focus on the process. Feel free to get in touch using the below link if you need any more help with respect to GMAT.
