Hi alexau,
In your prior post, you mentioned how you had scored 710 and wanted to push your Verbal Score as high as possible. While I don't think that retesting is necessary, it's your choice and you defined WHY you wanted to do it. With this post though, it sounds like you might not be as interested in retesting. Are you still motivated or has something changed?

Hi Rich,
I am definitely still motivated as the schools I am applying to have median scores well above 710. I guess the main thing I am struggling with now is getting over the hump from the first exam and rededicating myself to the exam for another month. I know I can do better as I had multiple practice exams at or above 740 and I want to get a better score not only for business schools but also for myself.
I want to do better, and I really would want to hear from anybody who had success on a retake. What was your strategy? How did you go about attacking your weaknesses? etc...
Hi alexau
Getting over that hump after an unexpected score is difficult. However, here are six things to remember. In the words of one of our tutors,
"1. Taking the GMAT twice (or even three times) will not be a black mark on your application. Attempting to improve one’s score demonstrates perseverance. Not a bad trait.
2. Try to forget your last GMAT experience as much as you can. You cannot be afraid of your last performance. Take into account the positives: You already took the test once, so you know exactly what to expect from the test center. If you have studied well, you already know most of the material. There shouldn’t be many lingering jitters about the unknown.
3. Close knowledge gaps. If you were scattered in your studies and used multiple sources without a proper pedagogic line to follow, find a prep plan that works for you. This will streamline your learning and boost confidence.
4. Practice all parts of the exam. Focus on your weaknesses, but hone your strengths too.
5. Take several simulation tests in real conditions and at roughly the same hour of day. On exam day, do exactly what brought you success on sim tests.
6. Improve your time management. This is a key factor on the GMAT."
Hope this helps. And best of luck as you prepare for the retake!
